While Washington debates slashing critical mental health services like the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline’s LGBTQ+ subnetwork, a more dangerous threat looms from abroad: China’s calculated campaign to exploit America’s internal instability.

According to CNN, a leaked Trump administration memo suggests cutting specialized support for LGBTQ+ youth from the 988 Lifeline, sparking outrage among mental health advocates. Since its launch in 2022, the 988 Lifeline has fielded more than 14.5 million contacts, with about 1.2 million routed to LGBTQ+-specific services. Experts warn that removing these services could put countless lives at risk.

Yet while domestic controversies dominate headlines, Beijing quietly gains ground. China isn’t waiting for military conflict; it is waging an ongoing psychological, economic, and informational war against the United States. Every division within American society, every neglected community, and every undermined institution offers China an opening.

China’s tactics range from spreading disinformation to deepening racial and political divides online. Weakening American societal resilience—mental health included—is part of Beijing’s long-term strategy to replace the U.S. as the world’s dominant power.

As America debates whether to support its most vulnerable groups, China invests heavily in global infrastructure, emerging technologies, and influence campaigns. Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative expands across continents while the U.S. considers cutting life-saving services at home.

Mental health is national security. Ignoring the emotional and psychological needs of American citizens makes the nation more vulnerable to outside manipulation. Studies show that suicide rates are four times higher among LGBTQ+ youth, a reality foreign adversaries could exploit to foster resentment, distrust, and division inside the U.S.

Moreover, the leaked budget plan reveals deeper cuts affecting African American, Latino, Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities. Every weakened support system is another crack in America’s social armor—something China is more than happy to see widen.

Protecting America’s strength means more than building stronger borders or new weapons. It demands investment in the health, unity, and resilience of its people. Allowing basic services to fall apart while China moves strategically on the world stage is a path to defeat.

The U.S. must stay alert: neglecting domestic vulnerabilities today only empowers Beijing’s ambitions tomorrow.
