In recent years, China has been struggling with an unstable food supply. Extreme weather conditions, such as droughts and floods, have severely affected China's crop yields. The Russia-Ukraine war has further disrupted global food supply chains. As a result, both state-owned and private enterprises in China have been aggressively purchasing land, grain storage facilities, and food processing plants worldwide. In March 2022, during the National People's Congress, Xi Jinping mentioned that Chinese people need to adopt a "Big Food Strategy" to ensure the effective and sufficient supply of various food items. Xi's remarks highlight the Chinese Communist Party's increasingly severe food security issues.
Although agriculture constitutes only a small part of the U.S. GDP, it remains a crucial source of livelihood for many families. As previously mentioned, as much as 10% of jobs are related to agriculture. Allowing Chinese nationals to continue acquiring land would effectively hand over control of these jobs to them. In such a scenario, China could not only influence America's food supply but also directly control a significant number of domestic employment opportunities.
